The '90s were a hayday for snacks. Overly sweet, amazingly awesome packaged goods filled supermarket shelves: Gushers, Berry Berry Kix, Shark Bites. (RIP, squad.) But let's not forget the most important one of all: Dunkaroos. Let's admit we all watched the Betty Crocker commercial, kangaroo bouncing across the screen asking "So how do you do your Dunkaroos?!", then wanted to throw our own snack pack at the TV when the kids didn't even know the right way to Dunkaroo! What were they doing??!!
Most of us '90s kids grew up and left Dunkaroos behind, hardly thinking about them until 2012, when news spread that they were being discontinued. The Dunkaroos nostalgia hit us like the hefty dunk we loved. Memories of my 8-year-old self begging mom to toss them in our grocery cart (a lost cause unless I had done something killer, like, won the spelling bee) surfaced. A homage to the beloved snack was deserved—and finally came the other day when my coworker suggested we make Dunkaroos ice cream. Instantly I could taste that creamy, too-good-to-be-real texture (it was).
Deciding which ingredients to use for this was easy: We needed sprinkles (obviously), birthday cake mix (for that overly sweet Funfetti-like flavor), birthday cake-flavored Teddy Grahams (see previous), and a little cream cheese frosting (for that good ol' Dunkaroo tang). The result is pretty spot-on. And if you haven't made no-churn ice cream before, welcome to the club. It's the best.
